What is the significance of college racism in today’s society?
I don’t know why but I never thought there would be so much racism at this level but according to a student at CU Boulder it obviously is “Calm down, we say, because this stuff happens every day to us. This isn’t news or a headline to us. We are used to it; both the microaggressions of “nice,” “everyday” racism and the more apparent, ugly face of blatant racism. But we are angry, and we are tired.” Lauren Jade Arnold of The Denver Post Paragraph 4. They’re paying to learn and are being chastised by their fellow students while little is being done about this.
How are students of color reacting to these racist moments?
“As black students, when we watch this video, we get a pit of anguish in our stomachs that creeps up to our throats and out to our fingertips, pulling every part of us into a deep feeling of unease, of rage, of disappointment — of something much stronger than all of these things that we cannot put into words in a way that white people ever truly understand. Eventually, this feeling ebbs; the blood drains from our faces, and we are left with our own thoughts that tell us we must calm down.” Lauren Jade Arnold of The Denver Post Paragraph 3. This was the black students’ response to the video of the white woman calling students racial slurs. These students are mad and there’s very little done about what they have to go through on a daily basis. ‘‘Sandy Hook comes to SU to kill [racial slur]” was found written inside a prominent academic building on campus.” Susan Svrluga The Washington Post. Ya Sy a black muslim woman student at Salisbury University has said she doesn’t feel safe at the school “”I shouldn’t have to feel unprotected due to blaten threats and racial slurs being thrown at me and my people.”” She thought it was necessary to tell this to Susan Svrluga of the Washington post about her time at Salisbury University and the racial problems that going on.
How do colleges deal with situations with these racially sparked moments?
“MSU President Stanley waiting for report before deciding if noose incident was a joke” This was the heading from Mark Johnson of Lansing State Journal when writing about a recent incident where a black student’s dorm room door had what looks to be a noose made of toilet paper. It sounds like the school wants to keep this out of the news so there isn’t a bad reputation of them. It makes sense that they don’t want this to become a bigger issue than it already is but this just feels like it could hurt them more in the long run of this.
What are the students doing to deal with college racism?
In 2018 Stephen Kantrowitz and Floyd Rose the co-chairs of the Ad-Hoc Study Group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison told a history that the college might not want to bring up. “The name "Ku Klux Klan," the sign of the fiery cross, and the image of robed and hooded nightriders evoke horrific histories of racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-Semitic violence. It may therefore seem shocking that between 1919 and 1926 two distinct student organizations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) took this name.”(Paragraph 4 page 2)” Most schools during these times had these “clubs” so UW was no different. Now though Stephen Kantrowitz and Floyd Rose wrote about what they want to see the school chancellor do in these times in seek of change. One of their asks was “ Help the university acknowledge and learn from its past. Long before the UW committed itself to its present values of inclusiveness, respect, and equity, some members of our community embodied those values in the face of hostility and derision. Their history deserves a prominent place on our campus. We propose a project to recover the voices of campus community members, in the era of the Klan and since, who struggled and endured in a climate of hostility and who sought to change it. Their efforts to bring change to this campus will provide lessons, contexts, and reminders for our efforts today.
